How Eugene and Oregon are Making Waves in the Global Vegan Contest

Eugene is making waves in the food scene by becoming the first city in Oregon to host the Vegan Chef Challenge. This month-long contest spans about two dozen cities across the U.S., Canada, and Singapore.

Throughout February, local restaurants, food trucks, and delis are offering special vegan dishes. Diners get to vote on their favorites until February 28. The event coordinator, Victoria Berger, knows firsthand how important this initiative is. She previously organized a similar event in Sacramento and believes it can really boost local businesses. “It’s a chance for vegans and non-vegans to come together and enjoy good food,” she said with a smile.

Veganism, defined by consuming only plant-based foods, is popular for many reasons, including health, ethics, and environmental concerns. Surprisingly, even though Portland is known for its progressive values, it’s Eugene taking the lead in this challenge. Berger explained that Portland’s widely spread-out neighborhoods made it tough to organize.

In Eugene, 20 eateries are participating, including popular spots like Bao Bao House and Willamette Artisan Pizza. One standout competitor is Drop Bear Brewery. Co-owner Lorraine Lehane, who is vegan herself, is excited to showcase a menu filled with flavors—like basil mac and cheese and almond baklava. She aims to cater to all diners, noting that many places often neglect non-meat options.

“Good competition is great for everyone,” said Lehane. “It encourages creativity and brings more vegan choices to the table.” Drop Bear Brewery has taken special care to avoid cross-contamination, with separate fryers for vegan and gluten-free items.

Berger stresses that creativity is key for contestants. She wants to see more than just basic dishes. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with vegetables,” she encouraged.

After the votes are counted, there will be an awards ceremony on March 17 at Drop Bear Brewery. This event highlights not just the shift towards plant-based dining but also the community’s enthusiasm for trying new foods.
