How Experts Are Equipping Lisbon to Thrive in a Changing Climate

The hori-zonte office in Lisbon is gaining attention. It’s one of the Portuguese finalists for the international Building of the Year 2025 Awards from ArchDaily. The team is focused on urban planning solutions to combat climate change in the city.

This mission will take the stage at the 9th Archi Summit from July 9 to 11, 2025, at Convento do Beato. The final recommendations will be presented on the last day at 2:30 PM. Notable contributors include architects like Manuel Aires Mateus and Inês Lobo, as well as climate expert Filipe Duarte Santos, urban planner Daniel Casas Valle, and sustainability specialist Vanessa Tavares. Their combined expertise aims to form practical solutions for Lisbon’s urban landscape.

According to Diogo Lopes Teixeira, co-founder of the hori-zonte office, Lisbon faces serious climate challenges. With the “ReThink Lisboa” workshop, diverse experts will collaborate to find effective solutions for the city and its residents. He hopes the final document will guide future sustainable policies.

One significant issue in Lisbon is thermal inequality. The European Environment Agency points out that Lisbon has the 11th lowest tree cover among European capitals. More trees can lower temperatures—about 1°C for every extra 50 square meters of vegetation. The city currently battles “urban heat islands,” with temperatures sometimes varying by as much as 11°C between different areas.

Other European cities are tackling similar challenges. For example, Paris plans to replace 40% of its asphalt with more reflective materials and is set to plant around 200,000 new trees. This proactive approach aims to create more pleasant, cooler urban environments.

The collaboration at the Archi Summit might just be the beginning of innovative strategies to ensure a sustainable future for Lisbon. With fresh ideas from diverse experts, there is hope for a greener, more livable city.
