GADSDEN, Ala. (WBRC) – The Gadsden Police Department is enhancing how they train their field training officers. They’ve introduced a new system to evaluate officer trainees, spotlighting their strengths and areas for improvement.
Captain Lane Keener leads this training program and emphasizes how technology is making their work more efficient.
“We’ve adapted the San Jose model to fit our needs,” said Keener about their new ADORE program. It tracks the performance of new officers alongside their trainers.
“This will greatly improve our data collection and help us focus on what matters: our officers’ strengths and weaknesses,” he added.
Field Training Officer Alec Burgess agrees that teaching new recruits requires flexibility. Each situation presents unique challenges.
“Understanding your trainees and their needs is crucial. Every scenario is different. After eight years, I can tell you that each day brings new lessons,” Burgess stated.
With the pressure that comes from public scrutiny, Burgess stresses the importance of a high training standard in the department.
“We keep up with news and legal changes, as our job can shift day by day based on those factors,” he explained.
Captain Keener adds that new trainees work with experienced FTOs who have undergone their own training to ensure effective guidance.
