How Galla Goats Are Transforming Lives for Struggling Pastoralists

Drought has been a huge challenge for the people and animals in Samburu County. It drains precious water and grass, making it hard for families to grow food and care for livestock.

In response, the County Government, alongside the Flocker Project, is introducing a new hope: Galla goats. These goats have been given to families in Poro, Sukuta, and Lodokejek, areas hit hard by water shortages. Many local livestock have perished due to the drought, leaving families in desperate need of support.

“We aim to help communities become more resilient against drought through climate-smart agriculture,” said Linus Leshore, the Chief Officer for Environment and Climate Change in the county.

During a recent event, over 1,000 Galla goats were distributed. These goats are bred to withstand tough conditions, making them ideal for the area. “A Galla goat can produce up to 2 liters of milk daily and is much hardier in drought than other breeds,” Leshore explained.

The benefits of these goats are clear. They not only provide nutritious milk but also a source of income. Leshore noted that one Galla goat can bring in more profit than ten local goats.

Lepartanapa Oden from Poro shared her struggles. “Drought took my herd. My husband lost hope and turned to charcoal burning. After his death, I had only two goats left for my four children. I’m so thankful to receive five Galla goats now.”

Patrick Lekimain, the County Executive for Environment and Climate, assured families that the new goats were treated for diseases before distribution. He also said, “Our agricultural officers will guide families on how to integrate these goats with their existing livestock.”

Davis Lekuchula, a local representative, believes these goats will not only support families but also help stimulate the local economy. He added that having reliable livestock would alleviate worries about food security.

James Leleruk, another local leader, expressed hope that these goats could uplift struggling communities. He sees them as a way for families to gain independence and create stable lives.

As the effects of climate change grow more severe, initiatives like this are crucial. Experts warn that without adaptation strategies, many communities could face similar crises in the future. Sustainable livestock like the Galla goats may become a vital tool in the fight against poverty in pastoralist regions.
