How Gelato from a Food Truck Triggered My Labor: A Deliciously Sweet Craving Story

Last September 21st, I wasn’t daydreaming about gelato. I was nine months pregnant, recently full from a feast of smash burgers and onion rings at the Snack Shack, a cozy spot that I’ve loved since childhood. That greasy meal had been my much-needed fix for salt and beef. Ice cream had become my go-to treat during those nine months, but on that day, my round belly was feeling the weight of impending labor. Little did I know, I was already having contractions.

As we left the Snack Shack and stepped onto Beverly Lane, we spotted a food truck with a chalkboard sign that read “Gelato.” My heart raced. Gelato is one of my all-time favorites, especially lemon gelato. Its creamy, tart flavor is like a cool burst of joy on a warm day. No other dessert compares.

This summer had been tough for me. I was excited to become a mom but scared, too. To cope with the pressure of motherhood, I decided to embrace life fully. While bungee jumping might not have been an option, enjoying gelato felt like a must when it appeared right in front of me.

My husband was in no position to say no. We dashed across the street to Andiamo Gelato, run by a lovely Italian couple. I indulged in two flavors: lemon pie and chocolate hazelnut. My husband didn’t order any; more for me!

Each scoop was perfect. The taste took me back to our time in Italy, where he proposed in Cinque Terre, surrounded by breathtaking ruins overlooking the sea. Andiamo’s gelatos, each crowned with a thin wafer cracker, were simply exquisite. My husband teased me about my double order, but the bright lemon and rich hazelnut lifted my spirits. I felt full, content, and ready for whatever came next.

Hours later, cozy on the couch with my dogs, I felt an unexpected rush, like a water balloon bursting inside me. My baby boy was on his way.

After a long twelve hours of labor, I welcomed a healthy, chubby baby boy into the world. Almost a year later, his round cheeks remind me of those indulgent gelato scoops—each bite a moment of joy, a little reminder of the beautiful journey we’ve had together.

Interestingly, recent studies show that satisfying food cravings during pregnancy can positively influence maternal mental health. According to the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, indulging in favorite treats can reduce stress and anxiety levels for new moms. So, perhaps that gelato wasn’t just a random treat; it was part of a well-deserved celebration of motherhood. Sharing joy through food connects us and enriches our experiences in wonderful ways.
