Large language models, like ChatGPT, are designed to understand and produce human-like text. They learn from large sets of written data, using deep learning and neural networks to identify patterns. David M. Markowitz, a communication professor at Michigan State University, was motivated to explore how AI could improve how we engage with scientific findings. His goal was to see if AI could make scientific information clearer rather than just matching human performance. In his study, Markowitz investigated whether lay summaries of scientific articles were easier to read than standard scientific abstracts. He analyzed over 34,000 articles from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) to look for differences.
Using a tool called Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC), Markowitz assessed the language of both types of summaries. The findings confirmed that lay summaries used simpler words, shorter sentences, and a more informal style than the technical abstracts. Despite these differences, the study indicated there might still be room for improvement, leading to the exploration of AI-generated summaries.
In the next phase, Markowitz tested whether AI could create clearer summaries than those written by humans. He used ChatGPT-4 to generate concise significance statements from 800 scientific abstracts. Participants from a range of backgrounds read both AI and human summaries and then rated factors like clarity and credibility. The results showed that participants found the AI summaries easier to understand and rated their authors as more trustworthy, although they perceived them as slightly less intelligent.
In a final experiment, Markowitz assessed how well participants understood the summaries. They had to answer questions about the content after reading both AI and human summaries. The results showed that participants had a better grasp of the material when reading the AI versions, answering questions more accurately and providing clearer summaries in their own words.
While the research is encouraging, it has limitations. The data came from one journal, which might not reflect broader scientific practices. Future research could include a wider array of journals and scientific fields to validate these results.
This study demonstrates the potential of AI to make science communication clearer and improve public understanding. Markowitz emphasizes the importance of using simple language, suggesting that complex ideas don’t always require complicated explanations.
