SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Every week, Prodisee Pantry helps people by providing free groceries. Each person receives at least 100 pounds of food worth about $250-$300. This includes meat, milk, canned goods, and fresh produce. Those who benefit often express their gratitude. “I appreciate them so much,” shared Patricia, highlighting rising grocery prices.
Currently, with the federal government shut down for over a week, many workers face the risk of missing paychecks. For those living paycheck to paycheck, this is a major concern. Prodisee Pantry has stepped up to support federal employees in need.
“Uncertainty is tough. Prodisee Pantry is here to help during these difficult times,” said Executive Director Deann Servos. The pantry previously assisted families during the last shutdown, which lasted 35 days in 2018, just before Christmas.
To help those impacted, Prodisee Pantry has organized a special event for Coast Guard families next Tuesday from 3-5 p.m. at their Spanish Fort location. They plan to offer additional services, such as rental assistance, and are seeking donations of diapers, wipes, and gift cards for formula.
Feeding the Gulf Coast, another organization, is also working on special distributions for federal workers. They support 800 partners across South Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and South Mississippi.
CEO Michael Ledger noted, “We know that in our area, over 34,000 federal employees may be affected by this shutdown. That doesn’t even include the military presence here.”
Amid crises, community support makes a real difference. Understanding the impact of each shutdown helps us appreciate initiatives like Prodisee Pantry’s. They are crucial not just for food, but for stability in uncertain times.
