How Hastings Street Crews Leverage Technology and Communication for Efficient Snow Removal

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – The Hastings Public Works Department has a clear plan for tackling snow removal. They use technology and keep in touch with city officials to make the process smooth.

Before a big snowstorm hits, crews gear up. They prepare their salt and sand mixtures, attach plows to the trucks, and fill up on fuel.

Steve Riehle, the Public Works Lead Engineer, explains that their work begins the day before a storm. “You have to get mentally ready. You might need to wake up very early and work long hours,” he says. “We ensure everything is fueled and ready, whether it’s early morning or the middle of the night.”

Crews also monitor the weather closely through various sources. “We watch the weather online, on TV, and listen to the National Weather Service,” Riehle adds. They also use snowplow trackers from the Department of Transportation, which have cameras to help them gauge the situation.

Another key tool is their ice-melting mixture, which varies in effectiveness based on the temperature. “In Hastings, our main mix is 50-50 salt and sand. The sand gives traction and helps break up ice,” Riehle explains.

Once everything is prepared, communication with city officials kicks in. “We usually respond when there’s about three inches of snow. The type of snow matters too—whether it’s wet or blowing,” he mentions. They check key intersections and collaborate with the police to assess street conditions, sending out salt and sand trucks as needed before full snow removal begins.

Riehle advises drivers to exercise caution around snowplows. It’s important to keep a safe distance, at least 100 feet from vehicles spreading salt.
