Hundreds of nonprofit organizations have come together, mainly those leaning left, to ask President Trump to stop what they see as unfair targeting of liberal groups. This follows the tragic assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
In an open letter shared with CNN, over 500 organizations voiced their concerns. They accuse the government of using its power to threaten their First Amendment rights. Notable signers of this letter include the American Civil Liberties Union and Greenpeace USA.
The Trump administration has used Kirk’s death as a reason to crack down on groups they believe promote violence. The letter from the nonprofits argues that political violence can affect everyone, regardless of their beliefs. They state, “It is un-American to use an act of violence as an excuse to intimidate nonprofit organizations.”
In their letter, they insisted that the groups did not cause Kirk’s murder and that the government should not be misused to endanger their rights. Recently, Trump’s administration has suggested actions like rescinding tax-exempt status for liberal charities and investigating organizations that have supported protests against him.
The White House has responded, claiming that these actions are aimed at individuals engaged in criminal behavior, not at limiting free speech.
So far, Trump has declared the left-wing group Antifa a terrorist organization, but how this designation will be enforced remains unclear.
Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, emphasized the need for unity during this difficult time: “It’s unconscionable to exploit this moment to deepen divides and infringe on rights when we need to come together.”
The nonprofits’ letter follows a similar effort from over 100 philanthropies who also defended free speech. In their statement, they denounced attempts to use political violence to mischaracterize their work.
Supporting these views are trends on social media, where many users express their concerns about government overreach. Studies show a growing perception that political speech, especially from nonprofits, is under threat. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, around 40% of Americans believe that the government is increasingly stifling dissenting voices.
As public discourse heats up, nonprofit groups stress that protecting free speech is crucial for the health of democracy. They want their voices heard and rights respected in a climate where tensions continue to rise.
