SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—The Minnesota State Mavericks, now 13-0 and sitting at the top of the NSIC, took down the University of Sioux Falls 93-82 in a high-energy showdown at the Stewart Center. A key factor in their success was their aggressive defense, which converted turnovers into a whopping 24 points.
Senior guard Natalie Bremer was the star of the night, racking up 32 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Her impressive performance pushed her career total to 1,956 points, placing her second on the Mavericks’ all-time scoring list, just behind Lisa Walters with 2,072 points.
Bremer wasn’t alone in the effort. Hannah Herzig contributed significantly with five assists and five steals, while Mackenzie Schweim added 15 points and seven rebounds. Ava Stier also made her mark with 10 rebounds and nine points.
The game got off to a fast start. The Mavericks quickly established a strong presence in the paint, scoring 12 points before Sioux Falls clawed back. The first quarter saw multiple ties and lead changes, but the Cougars hit four three-pointers to take a narrow lead, ending the period at 23-18.
In the second quarter, Minnesota State turned things around. Bremer’s scoring helped them seize control, taking advantage of turnovers to build their lead. Elisabeth Gadient and Schweim stepped up with crucial baskets, further widening the gap. By halftime, they were ahead 46-36.
The Mavericks didn’t slow down after the break. Their defensive intensity led to three blocks and five steals during the third quarter. With Bremer leading the charge, they dominated both ends of the court, finishing that quarter 71-53.
As the fourth quarter began, the Mavericks were on fire. Bremer continued to score, and Herzig applied defensive pressure that created more scoring chances. Despite Sioux Falls pushing back with three-pointers, Minnesota State held firm and sealed the game with strong free-throw shooting from Gadient.
Head Coach Emilee Thiesse praised both teams after the game, noting, “Sioux Falls got us on our heels initially. I’m proud of how we regained our composure and pushed through.”
With another game ahead on January 3 against St. Cloud State, the Mavericks are looking to keep their momentum going.
