Some iPhone users noticed a strange glitch while using Apple’s dictation feature on Tuesday. When they dictated the word “racist,” it briefly changed to “Trump” before correcting itself. This oddity caught attention after a TikTok video went viral, stirring up discussions about Apple’s AI technology.
An Apple spokeswoman explained that the issue was likely due to how similar the sounds of the two words are. She assured users that the company is working on a fix. John Burkey, the founder of an AI startup and a former member of Apple’s Siri team, noted that this glitch might have started after an update to Apple’s servers. He suggested that it wasn’t a data issue but rather pointed to potential problems in the software code that prompted this unexpected change.
“This smells like a serious prank,” Burkey said, pondering if someone had intentionally altered the data or the code.
This incident isn’t Apple’s first stumble with technology. Last month, the company had to turn off a feature of its new AI system, Apple Intelligence, due to misreported news summaries. In 2018, Siri also faced criticism when it displayed an inappropriate image related to Donald Trump due to unreliable information from Wikipedia.
Interestingly, the glitch emerged just a day after Apple announced a $500 billion investment in the U.S. over the next four years, which includes building AI servers in Houston. This announcement followed Tim Cook’s meeting with President Trump, highlighting their ongoing relationship. Cook has previously supported Trump financially and attended his inauguration.
