Matt Malaspina, the Director of College Scouting for the Green Bay Packers, has kept a close eye on offensive lineman Burton for years. His connection to Burton began with Eric Wolford, a former coach at Kentucky and a colleague of Malaspina in San Francisco.
Burton impressively showcased his versatility by starting at all three interior offensive line positions during his college career. His talent was evident even at the NFL Scouting Combine, where he ran a swift 4.94-second 40-yard dash. Malaspina noted that Burton possesses “really good size, speed, flexibility, and toughness,” which are key traits for an offensive lineman.
Malaspina expressed delight that Burton was still available during the draft, calling it a “win” for the Packers. His journey at Kentucky had its challenges. In 2021, he earned Freshman All-SEC honors after starting 13 games at left guard, becoming the first Wildcat lineman to achieve it since 2016.
In the following season, he seamlessly transitioned between right guard and center, before settling back at left guard for 2024. Last year, he started 12 games at center, testing his football IQ and communication skills under intense pressure in the SEC.
Burton describes his college experience as “a little bit of a rocky road.” Initially, he struggled with the high expectations that came from being a well-rated player from Kentucky. However, he credits his family for their unwavering support. They helped him navigate both the pressures of football and personal challenges. “Being able to lean on them got me to where I am now,” he said.
