CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — The buzz in the Dolomites is all about Lindsey Vonn. At 41, this skiing legend is making a stunning return to the Olympics after a serious injury. Just a week ago, she crashed and tore her left ACL. Most athletes wouldn’t even think about competing after such an injury, but Vonn is different.
After announcing her intention to race, she surprised everyone by completing two training runs at the Tofane Ski Center. “She knows she’ll have to push harder tomorrow,” said her coach, Aksel Lund Svindal, after her training runs. “You’re not going to win a medal without giving it your all.” Vonn has always been about pushing limits.
But how can someone ski on a torn ACL? According to Dr. Timothy Lin, an orthopedic surgeon who works closely with skiers, downhill skiing involves more straightforward movements than sports like football or soccer. “In skiing, the unexpected crash typically causes the injuries,” Lin explained. For Vonn, who excels in downhill racing, the risk might be lower than if she were competing in more intricate disciplines like moguls.
Despite the risks, skiing with an ACL injury isn’t unheard of. In 2022, Team USA skier Breezy Johnson tore her ACL, yet she still competed. “It’s possible, but risky. The next crash could mean more damage,” Johnson noted. “Many athletes ski without ACLs but choose not to talk about it due to fear of judgment.”
Vonn’s mental strength plays a huge role in her ability to compete. Bella Wright, another skier who faced similar challenges, emphasized this. “Her mental toughness is what defines her,” Wright said. “It’s what helps athletes cope with injuries.”
Vonn had been leading the FIS downhill standings before her injury, and although her chances seem reduced now, she remains determined. “I’m going to do my best, and that’s what matters,” she stated confidently.
This determination showed in her training runs. On Friday, she recorded a time of 1:40.33, finishing 11th among 40 competitors. By Saturday, she improved to 1:38.28. This trend of progress sparked both relief and excitement within her team, especially given the increased intensity of race-like conditions.
As Vonn stands at this pivotal moment in her career, her journey serves as inspiration. It’s a testament to resilience and passion, characteristics that resonate not just in skiing, but in every challenge life throws our way.
