TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — This holiday season, Amicus Brewing Ventures is taking a unique approach to help those in need. Instead of the typical “BYOB” (Bring Your Own Beer), they’re encouraging patrons to “Bring Your Own Can” for their food drive.
Food insecurity is a serious issue, affecting 1 in 6 adults and 1 in 4 children in the Big Bend area. This problem gets worse as the holidays approach, prompting local businesses like Amicus to step in. They’re collecting non-perishable food items from customers to help fill the gaps for those struggling to put food on the table.
Shannon Guse, the drive’s organizer, aims to use these donations to restock little pantry boxes placed throughout Tallahassee. “Caring for our community is a vital part of our business,” she said.
Hal Gentile, Assistant Dean of Basic Needs Programs, explains that several factors contribute to the spike in food insecurity during the holidays. “Resource closures, inconsistent hours, and increased costs all lead to greater need during this time,” he noted.
In Jefferson County, coffee shops like Cowhaus Coffee are also playing their part by collecting food for families in need, alongside local schools.
Owner Ashley Cowen said, “We believe everyone should have food; it shouldn’t be a choice.”
The food drive at Amicus runs until December 23. It’s a chance for everyone to come together and support those facing difficulties during the holiday season.
Local initiatives like this highlight the importance of community support, making sure that everyone can enjoy delicious meals during the holidays.
