Food Trucks Heat Up Hickman Hay Days

HICKMAN, Neb. — It’s a hot Saturday in Hickman, but that isn’t stopping the fun at Hay Days. Food trucks are buzzing, even as temperatures soar.

George Kazas, who runs The Parthenon, shares the challenge of working in extreme heat. “We have AC, but when the grills are going, it doesn’t help much,” he says. Inside these trucks, the temperature can feel like 10 to 20 degrees hotter than outside.

Staying hydrated is key. “Just drink plenty of water. That’s the main thing,” Kazas advises. Fans and open windows provide some relief, but it’s still tough.

Despite the heat, the festival attracted hundreds. Nassir, another food vendor, appreciates the support. “I’m sweating a lot, but the smiling faces make it worth it,” he says.

Kaia from Lemonade Lab shares how they cope. “We use fans and keep the windows open for airflow. We have plenty of drinks to stay cool,” she explains. Their tricks help them survive the hot weather.

After the long day, Nassir has a plan to cool down. “I’m heading to cryotherapy to recover,” he laughs.

This year’s Hay Days shows how communities come together, even in challenging conditions. The spirit of fun and support shines through, reminding us that good vibes can beat the heat.

In 2023, food truck sales surged over 17% compared to previous years, indicating a growing trend in outdoor dining experiences. Festivals like this not only provide delicious food but also foster community ties.

As temperatures rise, staying cool during outdoor activities becomes increasingly important. Public health experts recommend staying hydrated and taking breaks in the shade, reinforcing the resilience and creativity of vendors at festivals.
