Made in Britain is taking a big step in promoting sustainability within the UK’s architectural terracotta industry. They’ve teamed up with Darwen Terracotta, the only British-owned maker of architectural terracotta, to introduce a new Environmental and Social Value (ESV) Certification.
Darwen Terracotta received this certification as a testament to its commitment to making eco-friendly products. Their Marketing Manager, Simona Weldon, emphasized that reaching this goal boosts their credibility in sustainability. She believes this certification will inspire others in the industry to prioritize green practices.
Weldon stated, “Sustainability is at the heart of what we do. By leading by example, we hope to encourage other businesses to join us in reducing our carbon footprint and protecting our planet.”
The ESV Certification, developed by Made in Britain with MAP UK & International, aligns with the UK Government’s Social Value Model for 2025. This model helps organizations demonstrate their social and environmental impact in a competitive marketplace.
Darwen Terracotta is already making significant contributions to the community and the environment. They focus on responsible sourcing, efficient energy use, waste reduction, and water conservation. For example, they utilize recycled materials, LED lighting, and reusable packaging to minimize their environmental impact. They are also working on a life-cycle assessment to secure the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for their products.
Socially, Darwen Terracotta supports local initiatives like the Blackburn and Darwen Youth Zone, providing a safe space for young people. They engage with schools and conservation groups, emphasizing inclusivity in their workplace.
According to the UK’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the manufacturing sector is responsible for about 10% of the country’s carbon emissions. By adopting certifications like the ESV, manufacturers can make a significant difference. John Pearce, CEO of Made in Britain, remarked, “It’s heartening to see companies like Darwen Terracotta leading the way in environmental action, encouraging more businesses to follow suit.”
