The recent firing of federal workers from key agencies is raising concerns. This includes crucial positions responsible for enforcing environmental laws.
Since President Trump took office, numerous employees from agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Energy (DOE), and the U.S. Forest Service have lost their jobs without clear reasons. The EPA alone saw the departure of 497 employees in their first year. The Department of Energy also faced significant layoffs, with nearly 2,000 workers overseeing clean energy and important infrastructure projects being let go. The U.S. Forest Service has lost about 3,400 employees, representing about 10% of its workforce, at a time when issues like drought and wildfires are rising.
Raúl García, Vice President of Policy and Legislation at Earthjustice, expressed serious concerns. He stated, “The cuts and layoffs will undermine vital services that protect public health and the environment. These employees are essential for maintaining clean water, reliable electricity, and supporting economic growth through infrastructure and job creation.” He stressed that the impact of these firings will be felt throughout the country and urges a stop to these actions.
