As November unfolds, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) continues to support households, even during ongoing government uncertainties. In Hamilton County, initiatives to assist those in need are thriving. Food banks are active, and efforts are in place to keep them stocked through donations and fundraisers. Today, we spotlight Meijer, which recently boosted local food pantries with a generous donation.

Midwest retailer Meijer is stepping up amid rising hunger challenges with a remarkable $4 million donation via its Simply Give hunger relief program. Eric Dean, Meijer’s Market Director for Indianapolis, shared insights about their local support, including a $200,000 contribution to Gleaners Food Bank, which serves 21 counties in Indiana. This organization is vital, currently aiding one in seven residents facing food insecurity.

Simply Give has been part of our mission for 17 years,” Dean explained. “We work with all 270 stores to partner with local food pantries. Customers can purchase donation cards in $10 increments, and Meijer matches these contributions. During the holiday season, we even have double match days, where a $10 purchase turns into $30 for local food banks.”

Each year, Meijer’s commitment shines brightest during Thanksgiving. From November 23 to 29, for every Meijer brand product sold, the company donates a meal to food pantry partners. This consistent support helps ensure that families don’t go hungry, especially during the holidays.

For Dean, the partnerships with organizations like Gleaners are deeply personal. “We know the impact they make and want to continue supporting them in their mission against food insecurity,” he remarked. In late October, his team took part in a volunteer event, packing 850 Thanksgiving meals for Gleaners, showcasing their dedication beyond just monetary donations.

What’s the need behind these efforts? Recent statistics reveal that food insecurity affects millions nationwide. In Indiana alone, as many as 1.6 million residents struggle with access to food. These figures highlight the critical role that organizations and businesses play in addressing hunger. Gleaners and others like them are crucial lifelines for our communities.

Such initiatives are not only about charity; they foster community spirit. Social media has seen a surge in conversations around local partnerships, with many residents expressing gratitude and sharing their experiences of giving back. People are increasingly aware of how small acts—like buying a donation card—can culminate into substantial help for those in need.

As stores like Meijer continue to bolster food banks, it’s a reminder that everyone can play a role in combating hunger. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness, every little bit helps.
