Knicks fans were fired up after a recent game. Many believed coach Mike Brown should have called a timeout in the closing seconds. But there was a twist: the Knicks didn’t actually have any timeouts left. This detail, mistakenly reported by NBC, left fans buzzing in confusion.
The Knicks lost to the Hawks, 107-106, making the series tied at one game each. In those final moments, Josh Hart snagged a rebound off a missed free throw and quickly passed to Mikal Bridges, who unfortunately missed the last-second shot.
The NBC broadcast claimed the Knicks still had a timeout, but it was a false alarm. A graphic on the screen showed they had one left, but this was an error that occurred with just 5.6 seconds remaining, after a missed free throw by C.J. McCollum.
Teams can only keep two timeouts in the last three minutes of the game. Brown had already called one timeout at 2:43, and then another just 10 seconds before the game ended. “We weren’t fluid in a couple of possessions,” he explained later. “I wanted to set up something offensively.”
This situation sparked discussions on social media. Many fans shared their confusion. Fox Sports host Nick Wright tweeted, “I deleted my tweet about the Knicks not taking a timeout because… evidently they didn’t have one??? That makes a lot more sense.” Zach Gelb, another sports talk host, chimed in, sharing his mixed feelings about not taking a timeout, only to realize none were available.
Interestingly, it’s not the first time a scoreboard error has sparked debate. In past seasons, incorrect information during critical moments has led to heated discussions among fans and analysts alike. For instance, during a playoff game in 2021, a similar miscommunication led to a timeout confusion that fans are still talking about.
After the game, Brown noted that if he had a timeout on that last play, it would have come down to instinct. “I thought it was a good shot; it wasn’t under significant pressure,” he commented.
In moments like these, the blend of excitement and frustration is palpable among fans. As for the Knicks, they’ll need to learn from this experience and move ahead with focus in the next games.
