How Misdiagnosing Healthy Patients Became a Doctor’s Path to a Lavish Lifestyle

HOUSTON (WKRC) – Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada, a 68-year-old rheumatologist, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a massive healthcare fraud scheme. He falsely diagnosed patients with chronic illnesses and performed unnecessary treatments, causing significant harm. This case resulted in over $118 million in false claims, with insurers losing more than $28 million.

The charges against him include conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, healthcare fraud, and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Along with his prison sentence, he must forfeit over $28 million in assets, which include luxury properties and a high-end sports car.

During the trial, evidence showed that Zamora-Quezada diagnosed patients with rheumatoid arthritis when they were healthy. This misdiagnosis led patients to undergo harmful treatments, like chemotherapy, for diseases they didn’t have. Some underwent unnecessary tests, resulting in painful side effects, including strokes and severe pain.

Matthew R. Galeotti, a top official at the Justice Department, remarked on the deep betrayal of trust, saying Zamora-Quezada’s actions traumatized vulnerable patients who sought help. Aaron Tapp, an FBI Special Agent, added that the emotional and physical suffering of the patients and their families was profoundly alarming.

Other rheumatologists in the Rio Grande Valley saw numerous patients previously diagnosed by Zamora-Quezada and confirmed they were misdiagnosed. Many patients, after realizing they weren’t actually sick, shared how devastating the ordeal was for them. One patient expressed feelings of hopelessness, saying, "Being pumped with medication, I didn’t feel like my life had any meaning."

In recent years, medical fraud cases have been on the rise. According to a 2022 report by the National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association, healthcare fraud costs the U.S. economy an estimated $68 billion each year. This incident shines a light on the importance of oversight in healthcare practices.
