India’s New Path in Global Diplomacy
From July 2 to 9, Prime Minister Narendra Modi traveled to five nations—Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. This visit aimed to strengthen India’s relationships with countries of the Global South.
In Ghana, Modi was the first Indian Prime Minister to visit since 1995. He discussed energy, defense, and healthcare with President John Dramani Mahama. Both leaders agreed to elevate their partnership and signed four important agreements, focusing on traditional health practices and defense cooperation.
One memorable moment was when Modi spoke at Ghana’s Parliament. He emphasized shared democratic values and India’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s growth. As a token of appreciation for his diplomatic efforts, he received Ghana’s highest honor, the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana.
Next, Modi visited Trinidad and Tobago, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister since 1999. Here, he celebrated the history of Indian migration to the Caribbean and extended citizenship options to descendants of Indian-origin Trinidadians. This gesture was warmly received by the local community.
In Argentina, Modi and President Javier Milei discussed defense manufacturing, mining, and renewable energy. Their talks on lithium mining are particularly important, aligning with India’s ambitions in electric vehicles and clean energy.
The fifth stop was Brazil, where Modi attended the BRICS Summit. He advocated for reforms in global institutions and focused on climate finance and AI governance. This summit also addressed a recent terror attack in India, showcasing a united front against violence.
Finally, Modi visited Namibia. This marked India’s first visit in 27 years and involved discussions on entrepreneurship and health. Namibia also became the first nation to adopt India’s UPI payment technology, highlighting India’s push for digital payments.
Experts say this tour signals a shift in India’s foreign policy. Ruchita Beri from the Vivekananda International Foundation notes that these trips show Africa is a priority for India. She sees cooperation in critical minerals and defense as key components of India’s strategy.
Saurabh Mishra from the Manohar Parrikar Institute emphasizes the importance of defense ties, particularly with Brazil. He noted that the expanded BRICS format focused on a non-Western approach.
This five-nation tour is more than just diplomacy; it marks India’s evolution into a global leader, focused on technology, resources, and partnerships with the Global South.
