Celebrating Child Life Month: Music Therapy’s Impact on Young Patients
March is a special time as we honor Child Life Month, focusing on those who help children through tough times, especially in hospitals. One shining example is Brandon Banas, a music therapist at Corewell Health in Royal Oak, Michigan. He works mainly in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Brandon has a close bond with a three-year-old named Carson Jamo, who was diagnosed with leukemia in June 2025. Carson, full of spirit in his Detroit Tigers shirt, has spent a lot of time at the hospital getting treatment. His mother, Casey, shared a touching moment: Carson attended a “Strike Out Cancer” game last summer, completely unaware that he would soon face his own cancer diagnosis.
Casey expressed her gratitude for Brandon’s role in their journey. “He has made it a little brighter and easier,” she said. Brandon understands the weight of his work. Initially, he felt overwhelmed, thinking about the responsibility he held. But as he plays music with children like Carson, he helps them feel more at ease.
Brandon pulls out his musical instruments, and almost instantly, the kids begin to relax. “When I play, they become more bubbly and less scared,” he explained.
For Brandon, working with Carson has been fulfilling. “It’s a joy to see the impact he and his family have on me, too,” he reflected.
Casey noted that this music therapy provides a much-needed creative outlet for Carson. It’s something exciting for him to look forward to during challenging hospital visits, and it benefits his older brother, Connor, as well. “As the big brother, it can be tough to feel overlooked,” Casey mentioned. Thankfully, the child life team keeps Connor engaged, making the whole family feel supported.
Carson is expected to finish his chemotherapy by September. His family hopes to return to Comerica Park for another “Strike Out Cancer” game, turning a difficult chapter into a hopeful celebration.
Music therapy is gaining recognition in hospitals for its therapeutic benefits. A recent study found that musical interventions can significantly reduce anxiety and stress in pediatric patients. This shows how important Brandon’s work is not only for the children but for their families as well.
