“Nanotechnology isn’t just for labs anymore — it’s now part of our daily lives,” says Professor BS Murty, the Director of IIT Hyderabad. This technology is changing everything, from the cosmetics we use to the medicine we rely on. It’s even influencing electronics and environmental practices.
In a recent chat with ETV Bharat, Prof. Murty shared the growing importance of nanotechnology across different fields. “Today, it’s a key ingredient in many everyday products. You can’t think of modern advancements without considering nanotechnology,” he explained.
He provided some eye-opening examples of how this tech is making a difference. For instance, nanotechnology is helping target cancer cells, improving electronic devices, and was crucial in developing COVID-19 vaccines.
Prof. Murty emphasized that leading institutions in India are focused on groundbreaking innovations in this field. He believes that fostering research skills in students is vital. “The brightest ideas often come from young minds when they receive proper guidance and support,” he said.
Looking ahead, he mentioned a significant upcoming event: a national conference called “Nanotechnology for Learning,” happening from September 7 to 11 at the University of Kashmir with IIT Hyderabad. “This conference will gather scientists from India and beyond to discuss nanotechnology’s role in society and how to advance it,” he said.
Discussing the state of research in India, Prof. Murty pointed out the immense talent among students. However, he highlighted a lack of infrastructure to help them reach their potential. “We have brilliant students, but we need to guide them toward research and provide better facilities,” he stated. He believes that with the right support, the vision of a developed India, or Viksit Bharat, can be achieved.
He also expressed admiration for engineering students in Kashmir but recognized the resource gap they face. He encouraged them to take part in skill development programs at IIT Hyderabad. “I invite Kashmiri students to join our training programs for a few months. Skill development is essential for employability and innovation,” he said.
Additionally, Prof. Murty mentioned a new post-doctoral program at IIT Hyderabad, open to students from Kashmir and other areas. “When we collaborate, we become stronger and can build a more developed India,” he concluded.
Nanotechnology is not just a futuristic idea; it’s a transformative part of our current reality. According to a report from the National Nanotechnology Initiative, the global nanotechnology market reached approximately $2 trillion in 2022 and is expected to keep growing. As this technology becomes more integrated into our lives, staying informed about its developments and participating in educational opportunities can open doors for future innovations.
Understanding and harnessing the power of nanotechnology will shape industries and improve lives. It’s an exciting time for young innovators and researchers who will lead the way in this field.
