Michael C. Hall, who plays Dexter, explains the return with a shrug. “Well, he didn’t get shot in the head,” he laughs during a Zoom call. Interestingly, it was Hall who suggested bringing Dexter back. “What if he didn’t die?” he pondered. It’s a thought that intrigued him, opening the door for Dexter to shed some long-held burdens.

What made Hall change his mind? “Time passed and perspective shifted,” he says. The way “New Blood” ended allowed for a fresh start for Dexter. The character can now explore new territory.

As the latest series unfolds, its early moments may feel focused on explaining how he survived. Yet, it captures that old Dexter magic. The season promises a twisted relationship between Dexter and Harrison, who has matured through trauma.

Harrison’s journey has made him more self-aware, and Dexter feels a mix of excitement and fear about reconnecting. “He’s afraid his son won’t want anything to do with him,” Hall shares. Both father and son are on a path of growth after their dark shared history.

This new installment also introduces fresh faces. Actors like Peter Dinklage and Uma Thurman join the cast, suggesting an interesting mix of characters. Hall hints at an intriguing plot involving a gathering of shady figures, which sounds thrilling.

The buzz around the show is significant. “Dexter: Original Sin,” a prequel series featuring a younger Dexter, has sparked its own conversation. While Hall didn’t star in it, he provided the voiceover, offering a different take on the character.

However, it’s essential to recognize audience reactions. The original finale was criticized as one of the worst in TV history. Many fans had mixed feelings about “New Blood” as well. Hall prefers not to dwell on fan discussions, believing they’d drive him “crazy.” Nevertheless, it’s clear that viewers have invested in Dexter’s journey, wanting to see him continue.

Now, “Dexter: Resurrection” aims to keep the storytelling alive for several years, especially with the introduction of guest stars and potential spin-offs. Hall acknowledges that there’s still much left to explore, and he’s open to continuing the role for as long as necessary.

Reflecting on his time as Dexter, Hall believes it’s a unique role that continues to challenge him. While he’s played many characters, he finds a special thrill in returning to Dexter. He embraces the dark nature of the character, describing it as potentially therapeutic.

As for the future, Hall laughs when considering how long this revival might last. “I don’t think we resolve everything this season,” he says, hinting at exciting possibilities ahead.

For now, it’s safe to say that Dexter Morgan, the man who seems impossible to kill, will remain in our lives for a while longer. And maybe, deep down, that’s just how fans want it.
