Kansas City’s largest food bank is sounding the alarm about a recent tax and spending bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. This bill would cut funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by hundreds of billions of dollars. As the bill moves to the Senate, concerns are rising about how these cuts could affect families who rely on this essential support.

Stephen Davis, President and CEO of Harvesters – The Community Food Network, emphasizes that SNAP helps many vulnerable groups. “A lot of children benefit from the SNAP program,” he said. “Seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities also rely on it. Many working families who live at or below the poverty line qualify as well. On average, recipients receive about $6 a day.”

Harvester serves over 700 partner agencies across 26 counties and is already tackling high food insecurity levels. If the proposed cuts become reality, they warn that the demand for food assistance could far exceed their available resources. Davis pointed out, “The charitable food system cannot fill that gap.”

Recent statistics highlight the scale of reliance on SNAP: over 324,000 households in Missouri and more than 180,000 people in Kansas depend on this program. These numbers reflect the significant role SNAP plays in combating hunger in the region.

Experts stress the importance of addressing food insecurity, especially in light of these proposed cuts. According to a recent study by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, every dollar spent on SNAP generates about $1.79 in economic activity. This suggests that cutting the program may not only hurt individuals but could have broader economic impacts as well.

As the Senate prepares to vote on this legislation, many, including Davis, urge the community to advocate for SNAP. Speaking up for this necessary program is crucial for the families who may otherwise face increased food insecurity.
