Indian Railways’ Budget Utilization on Track
Indian Railways has reported significant spending as of December 2025. They have utilized 80.54% of their gross budgetary support (GBS), amounting to ₹2,03,138 crore out of a total of ₹2,52,200 crore. This is a notable increase of 6.54% compared to the same time last year.
The focus of this expenditure has been on safety upgrades, improving capacity, modernizing infrastructure, and enhancing passenger facilities. For safety-related projects, they’ve used 84% of the available funds. When it comes to capacity enhancement, 69% of the allocated ₹1,09,238 crore has already been spent. Similarly, customer amenities have seen an 80% utilization rate, with ₹9,575 crore invested so far.
These investments are visible in various developments. Indian Railways has introduced 164 Vande Bharat train services, 30 Amrit Bharat train services, and implemented the Kavach automatic train protection system. Impressively, over 99% of the broad-gauge network is now electrified. There have also been extensive upgrades such as new lines, gauge conversions, and improved traffic facilities.
In expert circles, commentators are optimistic. Professor Ramesh Patel, an expert in transportation, noted that these efforts should enhance both speed and safety significantly. “It’s crucial for the Railways to keep pace with modern demands. Speedier and safer trains can attract more passengers,” he said.
