How Reading Town is Leading the Charge Against Climate Change and Enhancing Our Environment

The Let’s Celebrate Towns awards, organized by Visa and the British Retail Consortium, shine a spotlight on towns doing great work for local businesses and their communities. Recently, Reading was recognized for its environmental efforts, making it to the final six in this category.

The awards ceremony took place in Parliament on July 16, hosted by ITV’s Charlene White. Notable attendees included Matt Rodda, the Labour MP for Reading Central, and Alice Mpofu Coles, the Mayor of Reading.

Rodda expressed his pride: “I am thrilled we made it to the top six for the environment award. It reflects the hard work in Reading to cut emissions and push towards Net Zero.” He emphasized the collaboration among the Reading Borough Council, local businesses, and residents.

Mpofu-Coles added, “It’s incredible that we stood out among over 170 towns in the UK. Our vibrant community contributes significantly, and each effort counts.”

Reading’s journey in reducing carbon emissions has seen a remarkable 57% drop since 2005. This progress showcases the commitment of the town towards sustainability.

Although Reading didn’t win, the award went to towns like Ramsgate and Morecambe. Such recognition highlights the growing trend of communities increasingly engaged in environmental issues, showing that local actions can lead to significant change.

Interestingly, community involvement in sustainability has been on the rise. A recent survey by the Climate Change Committee found that more than 70% of UK residents now consider climate action important for their local area. This reflects a shift in public opinion, making town initiatives even more relevant.

In essence, the Let’s Celebrate Towns awards not only recognize achievements but also encourage other communities to strive for sustainability, fostering a spirit of collaboration and innovation across the country.
