How Relationships Shaped Mark Johnson’s Journey to the Presidency at Louisiana Christian University

Pineville, La.—Meet Mark and Heather Johnson, a couple whose journey begins in a college classroom and spans over three decades filled with love, growth, and leadership. Heather once approached her Russian professor, John Mark Scott, for help in class. During their chat, he mentioned Mark Johnson, a classmate excelling in Russian. Heather thought Mark was “too silly,” while Mark found Heather to be “too strict.” Fast forward 33 years, and they are now celebrating life as a team and family.

The Johnsons attribute their success to meaningful relationships and mentorships. As Mark steps into his role as the first African American president of Louisiana Christian University, they reflect on the many friendships that shaped their lives. These relationships have been their anchor, guiding them through challenges and triumphs. Mark believes that great leaders must first know how to follow. “If you’ve been led well, you can lead well,” he says.

Mark’s parents played a big role in shaping his values. He grew up in Madison County, Indiana, where he learned to respect and connect with people from all walks of life. He recalls being bused from an all-Black school to an all-white school during his childhood, which broadened his horizons and helped him appreciate diversity. “We’re all just friends, different colors and shades,” he explained, quoting a childhood song about unity. This lesson has stayed with him throughout his life.

Mark made history as the first African American senior class speaker at Washington & Jefferson College in 1994. His wife, Heather, humorously claims her speech was even better when she delivered the commencement address in 1995. Their impact didn’t stop there. While pastoring Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, Mark led the church to join the Southern Baptist Convention, addressing difficult race relations along the way. His experiences culminated in his book, “Black Church, White Convention: A Pastor’s Story of Hope,” where he shares stories of building community and healing in a complex world.

In 2018, after years of attending the Black Church Leadership and Family Conference in New Orleans, the Johnsons felt a calling to move to the city. Mark enrolled in a Ph.D. program at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Heather pursued her own advanced studies. Their connection to Franklin Avenue Baptist Church introduced them to influential mentors, solidifying their commitment to the community.

Fred Luter, a respected pastor, describes the couple as “incredible individuals” who radiate love for God and people alike. “They’re approachable and you can’t help but love them once you know them,” he says. The Johnsons also played an important role in developing the Thrive ministry wives certificate program at NOBTS, reflecting their passion for empowering others.

Their journey has not been without challenges. Mark navigated the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic while serving as a pastor and faculty member. Despite these pressures, he continued to nurture connections within the community, encouraging people to find new ways to engage in church life. Heather offered support by developing programs for ministry wives, showcasing their commitment to serving others in unique and meaningful ways.

The couple’s experience goes beyond ministry; they have also led nonprofit initiatives across four states and Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, the fast-paced life came with sacrifices, and they’ve learned the importance of letting go of routines to embrace new chapters God has in store. “Transitions are necessary for growth,” Heather notes.

Mark’s appointment as president of Louisiana Christian University reflects years of preparation. He served as a trustee at Washington & Jefferson College, gaining insights that will help him lead effectively. “Like the Karate Kid, God was preparing me all along,” he says, summarizing how his past experiences came together to position him for this role. Fred Luter affirmed this, believing that their faithfulness to God led them to this moment.

With their eyes set on the future, the Johnsons continue to reflect on their incredible journey—one filled with love, leadership, and a deep commitment to serve their community.
