In a touching interview, Alexandra Reeve shared insights about her father’s unique friendship with Robin Williams. She believes this bond was an important lesson in kindness.
Alexandra discussed the documentary “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” which premieres on CNN this weekend. She described her father’s relationship with Williams as a brotherhood.
The documentary sheds light on Christopher Reeve’s life, especially after his tragic horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed. It also highlights his dedication to advocating for spinal cord injury awareness.
One heartwarming moment from the film recalls how Williams managed to bring laughter to Reeve in the hospital. He dressed up in scrubs and pretended to be a Russian proctologist, showcasing his talent for humor at crucial times.
Alexandra pointed out the essence of true friendship. “Their relationship showed how to support each other through thick and thin,” she reflected.
She emphasized that you don’t need to be a comedian to uplift a friend. A simple phone call or a thoughtful message can mean the world. “Robin was a beautiful example of that,” she said.
Williams and Reeve first met at Juilliard, where they studied acting. After Reeve’s accident, Williams remained a steadfast friend.
“For ten years after my dad’s accident, Robin and his wife, Marsha, were there for my family,” Alexandra recalled. They celebrated significant moments like Reeve’s “life day,” focusing on positivity.
Alexandra shared that even after facing trauma, it’s crucial to stay connected. Instead of stepping back, Williams and Marsha showed up more than ever. They would call just to chat, reminding Reeve and his family that they were still part of the same circle.
“Sometimes, what you need is a friend who treats you normally, who reminds you of who you are,” she added.
“Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” airs on CNN on Saturday. The documentary is a collaborative effort from CNN Films, HBO Documentary Films, and DC Studios.
