Rolls-Royce, the iconic British engineering firm, is making big moves in India. During the recent visit of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, CEO Tufan Erginbilgic shared how Rolls-Royce plans to develop India as a strategic hub, especially in defense and technology.
The company aims to harness its innovative technologies across various domains—air, land, and sea—to support India’s goal of a “Viksit Bharat” or Developed India. Their efforts focus on enhancing local defense manufacturing, achieving energy independence, and advancing AI infrastructure.
Rolls-Royce has a rich history in India, spanning over 90 years. Today, they intend to double their supply chain sourcing from India by 2030. Erginbilgic pointed out that the collaboration between India and the UK is designed not just for mutual gain but also to drive economic growth and promote innovation in both countries.
Prime Minister Starmer highlighted that Rolls-Royce’s commitment reflects strong UK-India relations and will aid in job creation and economic transformation. A vital part of this strategy is the new Global Capability and Innovation Centre in India, which is poised to become the largest of its kind for the company, consolidating digital, engineering, and enterprise functions. This hub will enhance civil aerospace and defense projects while nurturing local talent.
Rolls-Royce Holdings plc is still focused on providing power systems for aircraft, ships, and energy projects around the globe, distinct from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, which is owned by BMW. As Erginbilgic engages with Indian partners and customers, the company positions itself as a key player in India’s journey toward technological self-reliance.
Interestingly, recent surveys show that public sentiment in India favors fostering such international partnerships, with 78% of respondents believing that foreign companies can significantly contribute to local job growth. This positive outlook may further pave the way for fruitful collaborations that not only enhance India’s industrial capabilities but also bolster workforce development initiatives.
