How Soaring Food Prices Are Affecting Your Favorite Local Restaurants

ROANOKE, Va. — Dining out has become a bit pricier lately. Families are noticing the rising food costs, and restaurant owners are feeling the pinch too.

One Roanoke diner shared, “If you go out, you’ve got to expect to spend money. It’s just part of the convenience.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average price of pork rose by 2.3% from April 2025 to April 2026. The price of beef has climbed higher, now reaching about $9.64 per pound, marking a nearly 13% increase compared to last year.

These hikes affect restaurants first. Owners often have no choice but to adjust their menu prices. Jason Martin, who owns restaurants in downtown Roanoke, explained that the challenges began during the pandemic. “Supply chain issues just keep popping up,” he said. “Every time you turn around, there’s something driving the costs up.” He pointed out that not only food prices are increasing; insurance costs are too, pushing business owners to find creative ways to stay profitable. “A hamburger that used to cost $15 is now $18, covering everything from the burger itself to the to-go box,” Martin said.

To attract more customers despite rising prices, some restaurants are shifting strategies. Arton Williams, owner of Caribbica Soul, is introducing entertainment and special events. “Bringing in celebrities helps offset food costs. Entertainment draws people in,” Williams said.

Many diners still see the value in going out. They appreciate the experience and convenience. One patron said, “Would you rather cook at home, or enjoy the vibe here? It’s nice to go out, eat, and then just relax at home.”

With inflation affecting many aspects of life, experts note that dining out might require more financial planning. A recent survey indicated that 60% of people are cutting back on their dining expenses, making restaurant owners rethink their strategies.

As costs rise, restaurants aim not just to maintain profitability but to create a memorable dining experience. Even in tough times, the desire for connection and enjoyment remains strong.
