Sujata’s Saffron Success: A Inspired Journey in Jharsuguda

Sujata Agarwal from Jharsuguda, Odisha, had an unusual spark of inspiration one day. While holding a piece of saffron, she wondered how it was grown. Although she had never traveled to Kashmir, where saffron is traditionally cultivated, she realized that it thrived in sub-zero temperatures—a challenge in her warm climate.

Instead of giving up, Sujata dove into research. She found a way to create the right conditions for saffron by installing air-conditioners in a small room at her home. This innovative approach allowed her to grow Mogra saffron, the finest grade celebrated for its rich flavor and quality.

When her first flower bloomed, it marked a turning point for Sujata. “I felt that I had succeeded in the venture,” she shared, conveying her joy over this unexpected achievement.

In October 2025, her efforts paid off handsomely. Sujata harvested 750 grams of saffron, translating to approximately ₹7.5 lakh (about $9,000). Starting out took time; with the help of her husband and two daughters, she created the ideal environment for her saffron seeds, including suitable soil and temperature control.

After investing around ₹8-9 lakh to kickstart her project, she procured Mogra saffron seeds from Kashmir, preparing her space for the endeavor in July 2023. Within four months, she saw productive results. In January-February 2024, her second harvest yielded even more saffron with just a ₹1 lakh investment, paving the way for profitable returns.

Sujata’s ambitious plan for 2026 aims for three crops a year, targeting a total yield of two kilograms, estimated to be worth over ₹20 lakh.

Beyond merely growing saffron, Sujata has tapped into the market creatively. She sells not just the saffron itself but also the petals and stamens to Ayurvedic and beauty companies. With her business, “Bloom in Hydra,” she’s connected with customers in countries like the UK and Dubai, as well as various states in India.

Tara Nayak, who helps Sujata on the farm, noted, “After working here, my family’s financial situation has improved.”

This story isn’t just about growing flowers; it highlights determination and innovation against the odds. Sujata’s journey illustrates how creativity can cultivate not only plants but also new opportunities.
