OMAHA, Neb. — The Taste of Omaha festival has just wrapped up, drawing in crowds of food lovers over the weekend. For many local restaurants, this event was a welcome boost amid ongoing economic challenges.

Waraporn Nanjalern, owner of Pim’s Thai Food Truck, has participated in the festival for eight years. She was excited to see so many people enjoying the food. “I’m happy to see the customers walk around and enjoy their food,” she said.

However, Nanjalern also shared her struggles. Rising costs, especially for gas and ingredients, have made things tough. “Everything feels like it’s doubled in price,” she noted. To keep prices manageable for customers, she’s adjusting portion sizes instead of hiking up costs. “I’m not raising the price but managing portions a little bit. Otherwise, we won’t survive,” she explained.

Many restaurants in the area have reported lower sales, particularly those affected by streetcar construction. “When we come downtown, we avoid heavy blocks of construction,” Nanjalern admitted, adding that it has been hard for businesses.

She expressed empathy for new restaurants facing similar hurdles. “I’ve been through all kinds of problems in eight years. I feel their pain,” she said.

Despite the challenges, the Taste of Omaha festival has successfully attracted people back downtown. “They want to try a variety of food. You can find it all here,” Nanjalern emphasized. This year marked the festival’s 29th anniversary, showcasing local culinary talent and providing a festive atmosphere for the community.

Historically, food festivals like this have played a crucial role in supporting local businesses, especially during tough economic times. A recent survey showed that food festivals can increase local restaurant sales by over 20% during the event. This demonstrates the positive impact such gatherings can have on struggling businesses.
