How the Environment Committee is Tackling Climate Change and PFAS: Key Strategies for a Sustainable Future

This session, the General Assembly’s Environment Committee is tackling several important issues, including cleaning up PFAS in drinking water and fighting climate change.

Recently, Senate Democrats held a press conference to highlight their commitment to making the state more resilient to climate change. Their goal is to introduce SB 9, which is similar to a bill from last session. This proposal aims to help cities and towns enhance their coastal defenses and prepare for rising sea levels.

In addition to the coastline plans, the bill also targets PFAS contamination in drinking water—an issue that affects many communities.

The new House chair of the committee, Rep. John-Michael Parker (D-Madison), is on a mission to address climate changes while keeping the needs of communities and businesses in mind. Following significant flooding in western Connecticut last summer, many businesses sustained severe damage. This year, the legislature aims to better equip both businesses and residents against flooding risks.

“Our state’s businesses are part of every community, and we need to make those areas more resilient,” said Pete Myers from CBIA, a business advocacy group.

Another key proposal, HB 6280, draws inspiration from New York’s regulations. It suggests creating a climate change fund funded by businesses.

However, Myers noted that the business community strongly opposes HB 6280, fearing it would raise costs for Connecticut companies and threaten their competitiveness. “This will lead to increased expenses for businesses in our state,” he warned.

Additionally, the committee plans to encourage businesses to adopt sustainable practices with HB 5004. Similar efforts were underway last session, with CBIA actively involved in discussions about how these changes could affect businesses.
