Due to the ongoing government shutdown, Pennsylvania’s SNAP recipients won’t receive their November benefits. As of October 16, the Department of Human Services announced that payments will pause until the federal government reopens and funds are available again.
SNAP recipients will be informed when payments can resume. If anyone needs immediate food help, they can call 211 or visit Feeding Pennsylvania or PA Navigate.
Additionally, it’s important for residents to continue completing renewals and reporting any changes related to income or household composition during this shutdown.
Starting November 1, 2025, new changes to SNAP will come into effect from a bill passed in July 2025. Recipients will need to report their work or educational activities to keep their benefits. Specifically, eligible participants must engage in work, schooling, or volunteering for at least 20 hours weekly, which totals 80 hours monthly. If they fail to meet these work requirements, they could be limited to just three months of benefits within three years.
This update mainly affects those aged 18 to 64 who do not have a dependent child under 14 and are physically and mentally able to work. Notably, veterans and former foster youth aged 18 to 24 will no longer be exempt from these requirements. However, some may still qualify for exemptions under different criteria.
Experts on food assistance warn that changes like these may disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. Data from the USDA shows that maintaining stable access to food is critical for well-being and productivity. Studies indicate that increased work requirements can lead to stress and food insecurity, which can have lasting impacts on health and community stability.
As the situation develops, it’s crucial for SNAP recipients to stay informed and prepared. Community support programs are vital now, more than ever. Engaging on social media platforms also helps spread awareness about available resources and any changes to the program.
