How the Indian Army and Air Force are Shaping Maha Kumbh 2025: A Look at Their Vital Contributions

The Indian Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF) played vital roles in making Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj a success. This event is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, attracting millions of pilgrims. The armed forces provided support around the clock, ensuring safety, security, and smooth operations for everyone attending.

The Central Air Command led the IAF’s efforts by coordinating air operations to keep civil aviation running smoothly. The Army focused on security and infrastructure to support the event. Key units like the Purva UP and MP Sub Area and the Red Eagle Division effectively managed crowds and essential services. They built four new flyovers, 14 over/under bridges, and improved more than 100 roads. They also upgraded airport facilities, railway stations, and restored temples. Both the Army and the Air Force were always ready to respond to emergencies and provide humanitarian aid.

Specialized naval divers patrolled the Sangam area, rescuing 22 people from drowning. A senior Army officer remarked on how crucial their vigilance was for keeping millions of pilgrims safe.

Air Force Station Bamrauli became a key hub for flights from December 20 to February 27. It handled a remarkable increase in air traffic, with airport staff managing over 3.5 lakh passengers during this time. This included both scheduled and charter flights. They also expanded operations by moving military training activities to allow more civil flights, peaking at 186 flights in one day. Helicopters provided additional support by flying over the Sangam area.

The IAF also improved road access by building a four-lane highway to the airport, adding a railway overbridge, and expanding the airport terminal, making travel easier for visitors.

Attention to detail was evident in enhancing the Akshayavat Corridor, a sacred site welcoming around 70 lakh pilgrims during the event. A dedicated boat service at Saraswati Ghat offered safe transport to Triveni Sangam, with numerous boats and jetties available for use.

Disaster preparedness was a priority as well. The Army conducted mock drills with local disaster management teams to ensure readiness for any emergencies. They set up medical facilities, including a Clinic at the Mela, a Sector Hospital, and even a floating ambulance near Sangam for quick medical assistance.

Accommodation arrangements were made for pilgrims, with 223 guest rooms, 454 dormitory beds, and 30 tents provided. Some facilities were also renovated to offer a more comfortable stay.
