It’s been seven long years since Metro Exodus amazed us with its stunning RTX-powered ray tracing in a haunting post-apocalyptic world. A lot has changed in that time, especially for many Ukrainian developers working on the new game, Metro 2039, at 4A Studios.
In a recent presentation, the developers shared, “Everything we had planned for the next chapter of Metro changed in 2020 and, even more, in 2022. The war has shaped us. We’ve changed the story to focus more on choices, actions, consequences, and the costs of a future.”
4A is officially based in Malta, but the studio was founded in Kyiv in 2006. Interestingly, while the team now stretches across 25 countries, most of them are still Ukrainian.
For these developers, working through the ongoing Russian invasion means facing daily challenges, from power outages to the threat of drone attacks. They explained that these disruptions are frustrating but won’t stop them from delivering their best work. While family comes first for the team, their loved ones have provided essential support, helping them stay focused.
Growing up in Ukraine during the ’90s has given these developers valuable lessons. They’ve learned to appreciate every moment and that achieving goals requires determination.
“The worst of humanity will be on display,” they noted. Despite holding onto the core of the Metro universe, shaped by Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels, the game’s themes have evolved. The realities of war have added a uniquely Ukrainian perspective, shifting the focus from preventing conflict to exploring its consequences. Executive producer Jon Bloch mentioned, “Now, war is our reality, and the message has shifted.”
Expert opinions highlight the importance of resilience in the gaming industry. According to a recent report by Newzoo, the global gaming market is expected to reach $200 billion by 2023, despite various challenges faced by developers worldwide. This growth showcases how video games can provide both distraction and a way to process real-world events.
As the gaming community follows Metro 2039‘s progression, social media is buzzing with reactions. Many fans express support for the development team, recognizing their courage amid adversity. The blend of real-world experience into gameplay not only makes the story more engaging but also resonates deeply with players who understand the gravity of current events.
As we look forward to Metro 2039, it’s clear that this game will offer more than just gameplay; it will be a reflection of the fierce determination and spirit of its creators.
