A Generous Donation for Local Food Banks in West Virginia
This holiday season, the West Virginia Association of Counties (WVACo) is stepping up to support those in need. They are donating $10,000 to the state’s two largest food banks—$5,000 each to Facing Hunger Food Bank and Mountaineer Food Bank.
WVACo President Greg Vandall expressed how quickly the decision was made. “It was a no-brainer. As soon as I presented it, everyone agreed,” he said. The board saw this as a vital chance to help a larger number of people. Vandall noted, “Many counties are doing local efforts, but this allows us to make a bigger impact.”
The need for food assistance is especially pressing this year. Recent data from Feeding America highlights a troubling statistic: over 16 million children, more than 1 in 4, face food insecurity in the U.S. Of those receiving help, 38% are under 18, and four out of five households seeking assistance have children.
Vandall commented that the demand for help seems larger than in previous years, likely due to economic challenges. “There are more people needing essentials. It’s a tough time, and those who can help should step up,” he said.
Community support is at the heart of West Virginia’s culture. Vandall recalls, “West Virginians have always helped each other—whether in coal mines or gas fields. It’s in our nature to support our neighbors. This year, however, the need is greater.”
The spirit of giving during the holidays is essential to building a stronger community. By working together and helping food banks, West Virginians can ensure that fewer families go hungry.
