How Trump’s ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ Could Spike Demand for Local Food Bank Assistance

EAST POINT, Ga. – Local non-profits are worried about how the recent tax and spending cuts bill will impact vulnerable families. President Trump’s plan has passed Congress and is now awaiting his signature.

Kyle Waide, CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, said this bill is likely to increase the demand for food assistance in the area. Over the past three years, the number of families relying on the food bank has shot up by 60%, largely due to inflation. “We’re already at maximum capacity for food distribution,” he noted.

The new legislation includes significant cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which could leave many families hungry. Waide estimates that Georgia could lose between $500 million and $800 million in food assistance. The bill also introduces tougher work requirements for SNAP, making it harder for some families to qualify.

Waide pointed out that many people they serve now won’t meet the new criteria. “SNAP used to support these families, and now they will need additional help,” he said.

In defense of the cuts, the Trump administration has argued that only 28% of SNAP recipients who aren’t disabled are working. They claim the changes aim to bolster the program for those most in need. Trump even called the bill a “phenomenal victory” for America.

Despite these assurances, Waide warns that the community will feel the effects. He emphasized the need for more financial support and volunteers to meet the growing demand for food assistance.

Recent studies show that food insecurity affects millions of Americans, highlighting the urgent need for solid safety nets. The National Institute of Health reports that nearly 10% of U.S. households were food insecure in 2021, a figure that has likely increased due to ongoing economic pressures.
