How Trump’s Tariffs and Green Energy Rollbacks Are Driving Up Your Household Electricity Bills by 10%

Household electricity bills have jumped by 10% since Donald Trump returned to the White House. A recent report points to Trump’s push for data centers and cuts to clean energy projects as key reasons behind this increase.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright acknowledged that rising energy prices could be a challenge for Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections. However, he insisted that Democrats share the blame for these costs. He argued that policies from the Obama-Biden era are now causing prices to rise, predicting that his party will face the consequences at the polls.

Trump has made promises to lower utility bills, yet experts warn that his policies may actually push prices higher. A July report from Energy Innovation found that a spending package signed by Trump could raise wholesale electricity prices by as much as 74%. This is largely due to the removal of many green energy incentives introduced during the Biden administration.

According to data analyzed by Climate Power, household electricity prices rose from 15.95 cents per kilowatt-hour in January 2025 to 17.47 cents in May 2025. Meanwhile, gas prices soared by an astonishing 56% during the same period. Some areas, like New Jersey, have experienced even steeper increases, with rates spiking by 20% in June.

Jesse Lee from Climate Power stated, “Republicans are fueling an energy crisis and inflicting a massive utility bill hike on Americans.” He accused the party of prioritizing donor interests over the financial well-being of families.

The energy crisis is further exacerbated by Trump’s new tariffs and his moves against renewable sources like wind and solar. The rising demand from data centers, which Trump has favored, and worsening climate conditions, due in part to federal deregulation, are contributing to this issue.

In a worrying trend, the administration has also revised long-standing standards for renewable energy tax credits. This could threaten many clean energy projects, making it difficult for them to survive. Since Trump’s election, about 64,000 jobs in renewable energy have been lost or paused. Over $33.87 billion in investments have been canceled or delayed at 123 energy projects across 33 states.

As bills rise and jobs disappear, many families are feeling the pinch. “This report shows how badly this bill is hurting Americans,” said Lee. He emphasized that voters should remember who to hold responsible when they see their utility bills go up.
