Recently, researchers revealed that Poland’s electric grid was targeted by malware designed to wipe out data, likely by Russian state hackers. This attack aimed to disrupt electricity operations but ultimately failed.
According to a Reuters report, the cyberattack occurred in late December. Its goal was to interfere with communications between renewable energy sources and power distribution operators, but the method behind its failure wasn’t detailed.
Cybersecurity firm ESET identified the malware as a “wiper.” This type of malware is designed to erase crucial code and data, essentially crippling operations entirely. After studying the attack’s methods, ESET attributed it to a Russian hacker group known as Sandworm.
ESET stated, “We attribute the attack to the Russia-aligned Sandworm APT with medium confidence due to extensive overlap with previous Sandworm activity.” Fortunately, they confirmed that no significant disruptions occurred as a result of this attack.
Sandworm has a history of aggressive cyberattacks on various nations. One notorious incident took place in Ukraine in December 2015, where roughly 230,000 people lost power for six hours during a harsh winter. Using malware named BlackEnergy, attackers infiltrated power companies’ systems, ultimately causing a major blackout—the first of its kind linked to malware.
Experts believe that cyberattacks like this are on the rise, with many countries enhancing their defenses. The increasing frequency of attacks emphasizes the need for robust cybersecurity measures. In recent surveys, around 70% of companies reported experiencing a cyberattack in the past year, raising alarms about the safety of critical infrastructure.
