HP Printers Rendered Useless by Firmware Update: How to Avoid Cartridge Compatibility Issues

HP is facing criticism for a recent firmware update that has left some customers unable to use their laser printers, even with HP toner installed. This isn’t the first time HP and other printer brands have faced backlash over updates that seem to affect how their devices work, especially when third-party ink is used.

The update at the center of this issue is version 20250209, released on March 4 for the LaserJet MFP M232-M237 models. HP claims this update includes security improvements and fixes. However, a look at previous updates shows nothing particularly alarming that would affect toner usage.

Despite this, users started reporting problems after installing the update. Many have encountered Error Code 11, with their toner light flashing whenever they attempt to print. Some have cleaned their toner contacts and reinstalled the cartridges, but the issues persist.

One frustrated user shared, “It’s maddening because this is my small business printer, and it just stopped working out of nowhere. I even replaced the toner, which cost me $60.”
