Huawei has introduced its first passport-style foldable phone, the Pura X Max, in China. This device stands out as the first widely available foldable phone of its kind. Its launch comes just before rivals Apple and Samsung are expected to release similar models.
The Pura X Max has two versions available for preorder. The standard model starts at 10,999 yuan (about $1,613) for 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The larger version costs 11,999 yuan (around $1,800) for 512GB. There’s also a Collector’s Edition with higher specifications—starting at 12,999 yuan (approximately $1,906) for 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
One unique feature is its wide display. Rather than folding like traditional phones, it opens up like a book. The 5.4-inch cover display reaches a peak brightness of 3,500 nits. When opened, you’ll find a 7.7-inch internal display, also with impressive brightness and a refresh rate of 1–120Hz.
While Huawei has rolled out its innovative design first, Apple and Samsung are reportedly working on their own wide-style foldable devices. Leaks suggest that these phones may not be ready until late 2026, giving Huawei a notable advantage.
In terms of hardware, the Pura X Max uses a Kirin 9030 Pro chipset. It also has a 5,300mAh battery that supports both fast wired charging at 66W and wireless charging at 50W. The camera setup includes a main 50-megapixel camera, another 50-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 12.5-megapixel ultra-wide lens. This setup is packed with AI features to enhance photography.
Currently, Huawei hasn’t announced plans for a global release of the Pura X Max. This uncertainty puts competitors like Samsung and Apple on alert, as they may need to rethink their strategies in this emerging market.
The foldable phone trend has been soaring in recent years. A recent survey by Counterpoint Research noted that foldable device shipments increased by over 80% from 2021 to 2022. As technology continuously evolves, consumer interest in these innovative designs is likely to grow as well.
