Hudson Regional Health announced that it might have to suspend non-essential services at Heights University Hospital, formerly Christ Hospital. They need financial support from the state and other public entities to keep operating.
This move comes after Hudson Regional Health took over the hospital alongside three others in Hudson County earlier this month, with the state Department of Health involved in the discussions.
The organization warned its staff about possible layoffs. They filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act request, which mandates a 60-day notice before significant layoffs or facility closures.
If support doesn’t arrive, these service suspensions will kick in within 30 days. Hudson Regional hasn’t disclosed specifics about job losses or which services will be considered non-essential, noting that both union and non-union jobs could be impacted.
“Despite over $300 million in investments over the last 10 months, including significant funding for Heights University Hospital, ongoing financial issues persist,” explained Dr. Nazir Kifaieh, CEO of Hudson Regional Health. The hospital is projected to face losses exceeding $60 million annually without additional support, making it difficult to sustain operations.
The potential service suspensions come shortly after Hudson Regional introduced itself at a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a sign of hope as it took ownership of the facility. Heights University Hospital was facing closure after its prior owner, CarePoint Health System, declared bankruptcy in 2024, primarily due to long-standing financial struggles.
Dr. Kifaieh pointed out that “$75-$100 million in new investments have been made to upgrade services and equipment.”
In addition to Heights University Hospital, Hudson Regional Health manages Bayonne University Hospital, Hoboken University Hospital, and Secaucus University Hospital.
According to recent data, healthcare systems across the country are experiencing similar financial stresses.
