The No. 3 Nebraska softball team capped off a strong regular season with a decisive 13-5 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions in University Park, PA. The Huskers finished the season at 43-6, marking a program-best .878 win percentage, and they tied the Big Ten record with a remarkable 23-1 conference record. Only the 1994 Indiana team shares this record, excluding the unique circumstances of the 2021 season due to COVID-19.
Jordy Frahm was the star of the game, going 4-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs. Other key contributors included Hannah Coor, Jesse Farrell, and Kacie Hoffmann, each with two hits, and Ava Kuszak, Alexis Jensen, and Lauren Camenzind adding two RBIs each.
Starting pitcher Kylee Magee lasted three innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Alexis Jensen stepped in to get the win, throwing four innings, giving up two runs, and striking out four.
The game began with Frahm and Coor hitting back-to-back singles, quickly putting Nebraska on the board. A double from Kuszak pushed the lead to 3-0 in the first inning. In the third, Farrell hit a leadoff homer to further extend their lead. Although Penn State managed to hit a three-run homer, Nebraska kept its offense rolling.
Farrell and Jensen contributed significantly, with Jensen’s two-run home run in the sixth inning helping to solidify the Huskers’ victory.
Nebraska’s current 18-game winning streak is the longest in the nation and the team has won 32 of their last 33 games. As they head into the Big Ten Softball Tournament in College Park, MD, the Huskers have earned the No. 1 seed and will play their first game on May 7.
Notably, Frahm is riding a 37-game on-base streak, and Kacie Hoffmann has played her 200th game. Nebraska is finding ways to score, averaging over four runs in over 32 innings this season and reaching double digits in 12 games.
This performance highlights a broader trend in collegiate softball where teams are increasingly focusing on offensive power. According to recent NCAA statistics, home runs in women’s college softball reached an all-time high last season, showing a shift in training methods and player development.
