LINCOLN—Nebraska faced a rocky start against No. 22 Utah. The first set saw the Huskers making uncharacteristic mistakes, including missing the first serve and letting several serves drop untouched. It was a struggle to contain Utah’s Kamryn Gibadlo, who quickly made her mark.
However, Nebraska found its rhythm in the second set. The team dominated, showcasing impressive defending and serving, which led to a convincing 25-8 victory in that frame. They eventually sealed the match with scores of 21-25, 25-8, 25-18, and 25-13.
Coach Dani Busboom Kelly noted that Utah’s early aggression was challenging. “We started slow, and they gained momentum. But our stronger finish in Game 1 carried over into Game 2,” she said.
In the first set, Gibadlo was a standout with seven kills. To counter her, Nebraska adjusted its rotation to better focus on her, leading to her being held to zero kills in the second set.
Senior Allie Sczech ignited the offense, making her first four attacks count and quickly putting Nebraska ahead 9-3 in the second set. Andi Jackson’s serving prowess was evident as she spearheaded a 7-0 run, making it tough for Utah to maintain their offensive play.
Taylor Landfair followed up with another strong serving streak, finishing the match with two aces and matching her season high with eight kills. Coach Busboom Kelly praised Jackson’s serving skill, saying, “When she gets on a roll, it’s great for us.”
Defensively, the Huskers tightened their game, as they allowed minimal points in the second set—the least by an opponent this season. For the match, Nebraska held Utah to a mere .063 hitting percentage, which is significantly below their usual performance.
Setter Bergen Reilly made a big impact, contributing 32 assists and 18 digs. She identified serving pressure as the key to their turnaround. “Once we picked up our serving, the game really changed,” she said.
Nebraska’s offense was at its peak during the second set, scoring decisively without making errors. They finished the match with a .303 hitting percentage, with Rebekah Allick leading the team with 13 kills on a whopping .667 hitting percentage.
Overall, Nebraska’s adjustments and determination made all the difference. Their performance proves that a strong serve and a solid defense can turn the tide in any match.
