BOSTON — UConn men’s hockey had an impressive night, beating Boston University 8-4. Their victory was fueled by two power-play goals and a strong performance in the third period.
The game started with Boston University jumping ahead, scoring the first goal at 13:57. They quickly made it 2-0 with another goal from Cole Eiserman at 12:11. UConn struck back when Carlin Dezainde took a pass from Kaden Shahan and brought the score to 2-1. In the last minute of the first period, UConn capitalized on a power play; Jake Richard scored off an assist from Ethan Whitcomb, tying the game at 2-2.
In the second period, Boston University took the lead again. But UConn didn’t back down. Joey Muldowney scored, leveling the game at 3-3. After Boston scored again, UConn’s Tyler Muszelik made an important save during a critical breakaway. Shortly after, Brendan Dunphy sent the puck down the ice to Kaden Shahan, who found Alexandre Blais, setting up Dezainde for his second goal. The Huskies then took the lead on a power play when Ethan Gardula scored off a deflection, assisted by Kai Janviriya and Shahan. By the end of the period, UConn led 5-4, outshooting the Terriers 17 to 6.
UConn carried their momentum into the third period. Tom Messineo struck next, scoring during a delayed penalty with assists from Ethan Whitcomb and Jake Richard. Captain Tabor Heaslip added another goal, pushing the lead to 7-4. As Boston University pulled their goalie in the final moments, Gardula sealed the game with an empty-net goal, concluding the match at 8-4.
Ethan Gardula was a standout performer, with two goals that highlighted his skill. Joey Muldowney also played a vital role with one goal and eight shots, putting pressure on Boston’s defense. Kaden Shahan racked up three assists, effectively setting his teammates up for success. Ryan Tattle excelled in faceoffs, winning 63% of his attempts, helping UConn keep the puck.
Tyler Muszelik’s performance in goal was crucial; he made 30 saves, establishing a solid defense for the Huskies.
Looking ahead, UConn will meet Boston University again on Saturday at 5 PM in Storrs for the second game of their home-and-home series.
