In Hutto, it’s hard to stroll around without spotting a hippo. This day is all about celebrating these fascinating creatures and raising awareness about their conservation.

Everyone in town is joining in on the festivities! Expect live music, delicious food, local vendors, and plenty of activities. There are reptile shows, sculpting classes, and hippos in a variety of forms and sizes around every corner!

Mayor Mike Snyder shared, “We’re the only city in the U.S. with a hippo as a mascot, so it’s special to celebrate worldwide hippo day together.”

But how did a hippo become such an important symbol for Hutto? The story goes back to 1915 when a circus train stopped in town. Somehow, a hippo escaped and made a run for Cottonwood Creek. The frantic message sent out – “Stop trains. Hippo loose in Hutto” – became a part of local legend.

Since that incident, the hippo has ingrained itself in Hutto’s identity. Snyder noted that some neighborhoods even have rules about how many hippos can be on display in yards. “Our city hall, schools, and countless businesses showcase hippos. We even have a website that tracks all the hippos around town.”

If you couldn’t join in on the celebrations, don’t fret. Hutto’s hippo adventure awaits you all year long.
