When he accepted his award, he was visibly moved. “I can’t believe I’m standing here, alongside such talent,” he said, tears in his eyes. He thanked the film’s director, Kirk Jones, and Davidson himself, sharing a memory about hearing Ethan Hawke speak at Juilliard. Aramayo recalled how Hawke’s advice on maintaining longevity in acting impacted him deeply.
The night was a big win for Aramayo, who also took home the EE Rising Star Award. His film, “I Swear,” explores the life of a young man with Tourette syndrome in 1980s Scotland. It portrays his struggles with societal acceptance and ultimately his journey to becoming a national advocate.
Davidson was present during the ceremony. After experiencing some involuntary outbursts, he left early. The host, Alan Cumming, apologized for any discomfort felt by the audience, showcasing the film’s commitment to authentic representation.
Emma McNally, CEO of Tourettes Action, praised “I Swear” for its compassionate approach, noting past media portrayals often leaned toward shock value. She emphasized that this film brings to light the everyday challenges of living with Tourette syndrome, opening doors for important discussions.
Aramayo’s BAFTA win is a significant milestone in his career, coming after winning the British Independent Film Award and being recognized at the London Critics Circle Film Awards. “I Swear” is preparing for its U.S. Oscar eligibility after being released in the U.K. last October.
His impressive win over nominees like Timothée Chalamet and Michael B. Jordan proves that compelling storytelling can resonate even in a competitive arena.
