Two ICAR Institutions Make History in Global Rankings
On March 27, 2026, India celebrated a major milestone in agricultural education. Two institutions under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) made their debut in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. This achievement aligns with the vision of a developed India, highlighted by the Prime Minister during a conference in December 2025, which stressed the need for skilled professionals in the agricultural sector.
ICAR has focused on building a strong education system for agriculture through the National Agricultural Research Education and Extension System (NAREES). The QS rankings evaluated over 21,000 academic programs across more than 1,900 universities worldwide. They considered factors like academic reputation, employer perception, research citations, and international collaboration.
For the first time, ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly ranked in the 51-100 range for Veterinary Science, making it the only Indian university in the top 100 in this category. ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in New Delhi debuted in the 151-200 category for Agriculture & Forestry, joining a select group of Indian institutions.
In total, 10 Indian universities made it into the Agriculture & Forestry rankings, with IARI, Banaras Hindu University, University of Delhi, and IIT Kharagpur all in the 151-200 band. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) was in the 201-250 range, while Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University entered the rankings at 301-350.
Dr. M.L. Jat, the Secretary of DARE and Director General of ICAR, noted that these rankings reflect ICAR’s contributions to agriculture and health systems. He emphasized that success in this competitive field requires excellence in research along with societal impact. The strong performance of ICAR’s institutions shows their unique approach, blending research, practical science, and community outreach.
As India aims for a developed future, this global recognition marks a key moment for agricultural higher education, setting new standards in science and innovation.
